Where the Credit Goes
What Teddy Roosevelt Accidentally Taught Me About Writing
I’ve made 3 friends as a new writer: doubt, fear and the Imposter Syndrome. No matter how much I try to evade my new friends they remain ever steadfast, nipping at my heels. They sometimes offer helpful questions such as, What if you’re the only one that thinks this sounds brilliant? Before I know it, I’m sinking into the warm waters of their guidance, shielding myself from all rejection.
Yet, I’m reminded of Teddy Roosevelt’s famous 1910 Paris speech about how it’s not the critic that counts, it’s not the man who points out where the doer of deeds could have done them better, but the credit belongs to the man who strives valiantly, who errs, who comes short again and again – it’s the writer who is actually in the arena.
Maybe it was all those months of making my girls commit Roosevelt’s speech to memory in our homeschool room, but the lesson I tried to instill in them ended up teaching me far more. I think this is the reason why the wisdom of these brave words has become my knee jerk response to the critics who live in my head.
When I get off track, as I often do, I remember where the credit goes and why I started writing. It wasn’t to make a best seller list, it was to answer a call I felt in my heart with a simple, uncomplicated yes, where before I’d said no. With that quiet step I entered the arena. Yet, I will leave the results to the One who put the calling there in the first place; I’ve learned He knows what He is doing.
So I begin my journey to publish with a balanced, realistic mindset. I’ve heard it said that failure can be the price of admission. That may be the case for me, but even if it is not, I know that if I fail, I will at least fail while daring greatly. I will know that my place will never be counted with the cold and timid souls who neither knew victory nor defeat.
Now that we are in the arena, let’s be valiant together.
